Jefferson’s Ferry, a not-for-profit Life Plan Community, recently celebrated the one year anniversary of its Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) internship program with a luncheon that acknowledged the success of the program, its leadership, and its graduates.  The internship program, which is a required part of CNA certification, is conducted in partnership with the NorthShore Career Training Institute. As part of their certification training, CNAs complete a supervised, practical work experience. The students have been working alongside experienced CNAs in the delivery of daily services to Jefferson’s Ferry skilled nursing residents under the supervision and direction of Jefferson’s Ferry’s Director of Nursing, Richelle Rugulo, R.N. and NorthShore instructors.  More than 100 students have completed the internshipto date.

“We have been extremely pleased with our partnership with NorthShore Career Training Institute on every level,” said Robert E. Caulfield, President and CEO of Jefferson’s Ferry.  “There are clear advantages for everyone involved.  The student interns gain the hands on experience that is required for their certification while learning about the delivery of exceptional care by our 5-star staff and our residents benefit from the extra attention they receive.  Perhaps the greatest compliment we can give to the program is offering the training free of charge to current Jefferson’s Ferry employees who are looking to advance their own careers.”

Over the time that the internship program has been in operation, ten graduates of the CNA program have been hired by Jefferson’s Ferry.

During the lunchtime celebration, awards were given in recognition of program leaders, instructors and 13 members of the Jefferson’s Ferry CNA team who have provided invaluable hands on instruction and support to the interns.  An award of appreciation honored Dr. Sylvester Lewis, an epidemiologist and Director of the CNA program at North Shore Career Training Institute. Dr. Lewis has worked closely with Michele Berti, Vice President of Human Resources at Jefferson’s Ferry to launch and administer the program.

“The interns are trained on Jefferson’s Ferry’s expectations of delivering exceptional standards in care and service to our residents,” said Anthony Comerford, Vice President of Health Services at Jefferson’s Ferry. “We are thrilled with their enthusiasm and energy and the opportunity to give them the valuable experience that helps complete their training.”

Jefferson’s Ferry CNA team members who were awarded certificates at the luncheon are Stefania Acuna, Marie Dal, Brenda Diaz Cardoza, Sonia Garzero, Felicia Gomez, Jacques Hyppolite, Debbie Loggia, Lisa Ramsamooj, Michelle Ringgold, Paula Rodriguez, Cecilia Tarvarez, Lashawn Watkins, and Katrina Zahra.
