Jefferson’s Ferry life plan community was awarded low-cost energy by the ReCharge NY energy program to support a multi-million dollar expansion and renovation project scheduled to begin this fall.
The state-run program supports businesses and non-profits that commit to add jobs, expand operations, or otherwise invest in their local communities. Jefferson’s Ferry opened in 2001 as Long Island’s first continuing care retirement community and currently employs 350. The $82 million expansion will add a minimum of 41 jobs in exchange for 440 kilowatts of power for a seven-year period.
The costs savings are significant to Jefferson’s Ferry, and, in turn, to residents living on fixed incomes, according to Jefferson’s Ferry CEO Bob Caulfield. “Reducing our energy costs through this program goes a long way in helping us control the amount of fees we charge our members, giving them peace of mind about their future.”
Jefferson’s Ferry construction project, called The Journey Toward Renewal, is part of a larger strategic initiative launched by Jefferson’s Ferry in 2018. The life plan community offers independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, and short- and long-term rehabilitation for adults 62 and better.
The 165,000-square-foot expansion/renovation will add five new buildings to offer 60 new apartment homes, assisted living suites for seniors with dementia, and a Healthy Living Center for state-of-the-art fitness and rehabilitation services. The existing community center will be renovated to house a bistro and other dining facilities, plus art, education, and other community and gathering areas.
According to Caulfield, interest in senior living options has remained strong on Long Island. “Move-ins have continued during the pandemic, he said, and the marketing team has secured more than 75 percent of the required pre-construction deposits needed for the construction project’s financing.
